Every guest asks the same three questions in the first ten minutes. Where do I get coffee? How do the ferries work? And is that really the Opera House? (Yes. You'll stop checking by day two.) This is everything we'd tell you over that first coffee, in one place.

When to come
There's no bad month, only different Sydneys. Summer is hot, busy and glorious. Winter is crisp and blue, and nobody fights you for a table.
- Late October to November: the jacarandas go purple all over Kirribilli. Your camera roll will never recover.
- May to November: whale season. Humpbacks head north from mid-May (best late June and early July), and mums and calves cruise back south, closer to shore, in October and November.
- Vivid Sydney: the city turns into a light show, 28 May to 19 June 2027. The sails get projected on; you get a crick in your neck.
- New Year's Eve: fireworks at 9pm and midnight, and Kirribilli sits right beside the Bridge. Book early. Then book earlier.
Getting here and getting around
From the airport, the train runs to the city between about 5am and midnight. You'll pay an adult station access fee of $18.61 on top of the fare. Change at the city for Milsons Point, or grab a taxi if you're hauling three suitcases and a jet-lagged toddler.
Once you're here, tap on and tap off with an Opal card or just your own contactless card or phone. The caps are generous: an adult never pays more than $19.30 a day Monday to Thursday, $9.65 a day Friday to Sunday, or $50 a week. Forget to tap off and you pay the maximum fare, so don't.
The best bit: Kirribilli has its own ferry wharf on the F5 to Circular Quay, and Milsons Point wharf is a short walk away. The Bridge walkway starts at Milsons Point too, so you can walk to The Rocks for dinner and float home on a ferry.
Where to stay (yes, we're biased)
| Area | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Kirribilli | Opera House and Bridge views, quiet village streets, ferry and Bridge walk on the doorstep | Fewer late-night bars. (We call that a feature.) |
| Circular Quay / The Rocks | In the middle of the sights | Busy, and you look at the views rather than wake up to them |
| Bondi / Manly | Beach every morning | Longer trips into the city |
| Darling Harbour / CBD | Shopping, conventions, nightlife | More concrete, less harbour |

Things to do
We've written each of these up properly, with the practical bits and where to book:
- Walk the Harbour Bridge: free, five minutes from the apartment
- BridgeClimb: 134 metres up; book the twilight climb
- Sunrise kayak under the Bridge: from Lavender Bay
- The Manly ferry: Sydney's cheapest harbour cruise
- Bondi to Coogee: six kilometres of rock pools and cliffs
- Taronga Zoo by ferry: giraffes with a skyline view
- Kirribilli to Lavender Bay: our doorstep walk
Beaches
- Bondi, the famous one: start the coastal walk here.
- Clovelly, the calm one: the most sheltered swim on the Bondi to Coogee walk.
- Shelly Beach, Manly, the snorkelling one: inside the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve.
- Wattamolla, Royal National Park, the wild one: an ocean beach plus a calm lagoon.
The one rule: swim between the flags. Some Sydney beaches have serious rips, and the lifeguards are busy enough.
Day trips
Blue Mountains
Trains to the Blue Mountains leave from Central. Catch an early one, then head to Echo Point for the Three Sisters. The walk down towards them is about a kilometre return, with a lot of stairs.
Royal National Park
Train to Cronulla, then the little ferry to Bundeena, about 30 minutes. From there, the Coast Track section to Little Marley Beach is around six kilometres and three hours return, past Wedding Cake Rock. Stay behind the fence, take your own water and download the map, because reception is patchy.
Whale spotting from the cliffs
In season, no boat needed: the Bondi to Coogee walk, North Head in Manly and the Royal National Park coast are all good lookouts.
Local tips
- Sun: the Australian sun is no joke. Hat, SPF50+ and shade at midday. (Forgot yours? The pantry has you covered.)
- Tap off every trip, every time.
- Tipping isn't expected. Round up or leave about 10% if someone's been great.
- Power: Type I plugs, 230V.
- Emergency: call 000.
FAQ
What's the best time of year to visit Sydney?
Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are mild and less crowded than peak summer. Come in late October or November for jacarandas, May to November for whales, and 31 December for the fireworks.
How do I pay for trains, buses and ferries in Sydney?
Tap on and off with an Opal card or your own contactless card or phone. Adult fares cap at $19.30 a day Monday to Thursday, $9.65 a day Friday to Sunday and public holidays, and $50 a week.
How do I get from Sydney Airport to Kirribilli?
Take the airport train to the city and change for Milsons Point, or take a taxi or rideshare. The train adds a station access fee of $18.61 for adults on top of the normal fare.
Do you tip in Australia?
Tipping isn't expected. For great service at a restaurant, about 10% or rounding up is a kind gesture.
Can I see the New Year's Eve fireworks from Kirribilli?
Kirribilli sits right beside the Harbour Bridge, so it's one of the best places in Sydney to see the 9pm and midnight fireworks. Book early: NYE is the busiest night of the year.
